I WANT TO MAKE A CODICIL
Welcome to our Law for Life web pages on wills. A Codicil is an additional document that is designed to make a small changes to your last will. A Codicil will modify your will but does not revoke it. If you want to make major changes then it is usually best to make a new will.
THINKING OF MAKING A CODICIL?
WHY MAKE A CODICIL?
Changes happen in all our lives and, if youâre not careful, you could find yourself with a will that no longer accurately reflects your wishes.
In later years you might find that there are a number of small changes that need to be made to your will but you do not feel you need to go to the expense and hassle of making a new will.
Making a Codicil could be a suitable way of making those small changes and adjustments.
WHAT SORT OF CHANGES CAN I MAKE WITH A CODICIL?
Usually a Codicil deals with small changes. These include things such as:-
Adding/Removing An Executor.
Adding/Removing an Additional Beneficiary.
Adding/Removing a Legacy or Gift.
CODICIL ONLY DEAL WITH SMALL CHANGES
Making a Codicil is only suitable for making small changes to your will. If you need to make bigger changes then often making a new will is better rather than a Codicil
WHEN SHOULD I MAKE A CODICIL?
To decide whether to make a Codicil ask yourself have you recently:
Welcomed a new child or grandchild into the family?
Lost a relative or close friend?
Got married? Or separated? Or divorced?
Has Your House gone up in value?
Have You Recently Moved house?
Invested in a valuable personal possession?
Inherited money or had a financial windfall?
Possibly recently Retired?
If youâve answered yes to any of the above questions it could well be time you reviewed your will and if appropriate to consider making a Codicil. Even if you did not answer yes, it is still advisable to check your current will from time to time to ensure you don’t need a Codicil.
